Sony's Secret Weapon

There has recently been a lot of hype surrounding Sony's upcoming Sci-Fi Shooter titled, Killzone 2. Here's what I think of the situation. Knowing that ALL EYES are going to be looking at Killzone this February, it will either MAKE, or BREAK the game. Heck, I've already pre-ordered and paid off my copy for Killzone 2! But that's just me. From what I've been reading lately, some people are worried whether or not it will be worth the long wait. From what I've seen, it looks like it's definitively going to deliver.

This is the box cover of the retail version for Killzone 2. (IS IT KICK-ASS OR WHAT?!)

But it's not all good, unfortunately. Some of the things that worry me about Killzone 2 is the voice acting. Here's a video below demonstrating what I mean. The acting isn't exactly bad, but considering this is supposed to be a AAA (Triple A) title, I believe it should be better.

Go to Youtube to view the video in 720p HD.

Putting the voice acting aside, EVERYTHING else looks extremely solid. We all already know the graphics are insane. And we also know Guerrilla Games developed their own new Physics Impulse System which blends motion captured animation with physics impulses. Doing that, it creates one smooth motion of the characters movements. They went so deep into detail with this, that even the type of guns shot at the enemy affects them in a different way.

Another thing I want to talk about is, the scale. Seen in the picture below.

This game, is going to be MASSIVE. Massive, in a sense, that it's not even that funny. Massive, from the maps, the detail, the variety, the story, the sound, etc. I could go on, and on talking about it, but that's just giving me another reason to tell you why it's SO MASSIVE.

The first games problem, was that it tried doing all of this. And, let me tell you - IT HAD THE STORY LINE IN LOCK. The first Killzones' story was so finely polished and detailed, not many people noticed because they were too busy judging the darn graphics. Speaking of the first games graphics, they weren't too many "Ooos and ahs!" simply because the hardware wasn't up to the task. But that problem is now gone, and you know what? It's not even the best it could look. (Maybe they're reserving some of that unlocked power for Killzone 3? Who knows.)

Going back into the story, it all started out, well - here's how it all began.

Pretty damn intense. Am I correct? Getting goose bumps is only natural for something as awesome as that. :P And if you think about it, it can only get better in the next Killzone? We know it's probably going to be epic. But what kind of epic? Are we going to finish the fight, (I freaking DOUBT IT) or are we going to go on like the "Infamous" Dynasty Warriors series? (AKA EPIC FAIL.)

Whatever happens, I think Guerrilla Games and Sony have it under control. Sony's been through too much shit to screw this one up. If the 50+ MILLION dollars doesn't work its magic on consumers this February 27th, then I guess the PS3 is going to be stuck in last place from all we know. Unless they fix one problem that has affected the companies sales.

And that, brings us, to this.

Sony is going to have to advertise, and spread the word that Killzone 2 is coming out because, looking at Sony's track record, they haven't been advertising too much. That's affected them, because 80% of the products purchased by the average consumer is also on television. Personally, I LOVED Sonys Play B3yond campaign because it showed what the PS3 is capable of. Now, that's where the real problem begins. All of those ads showed us what the PS3 was GOING to do. Not what it already does. If they waited until now to play those awesome ads, then they would be set for a home-run.

Below, is one example of these awesome ads. The problem with this ad, was the average person had NO CLUE what they're talking about 40 seconds into the advertisement. Take a look below.
If you understood, good for you.

So, all this potential has sadly, gone to waste. But Sony's got it's own plans. I believe Sony is finally going to prevail, and show all those PS3 haters why it's a more than capable machine and overall product. It never deserved such hatred. This is where the console wars REALLY begin. Here and now, 2009 will lead the Playstation platform to its former glory. Sonys secret weapon is about to be unleashed. And all of it, LADIES AND GENTLEMAN, begins with the amazing, the INTENSE, KILLZONE 2.

man, in regards to that voice acting sample you posted, that must be an older video or something because I swear there were previous videos where the acting was much much better in that same exact scene. The only thing that leads me to believe the video your posting is a more current build of the game is the face that their are subtitles and a little bit more context in the scripting, also the falling drop ship actually has fire and billowing smoke lol. But damn, they removed the "I'm freezin' my nuts off!" line.. I loved that, ah well. Hopefully this isn't how it sounds in the final game.

good article though, put together nicely and thanks for the reminder of the Killzone intro in the first game - so awesome.

I watched the opening trailer for Killzone (1) and thought that the Helghast leader's voice sounded like the guy who plays Striker in X-Men 2 and John (police chief) in Super Troopers. Sure enough it was him. Brian Cox is his name. He's doing the role for Killzone 2 as well. That's awesome. I guarantee you his lines won't sound corny.

Color me excited.

Remember, SOCOM was going to be "the" game defining the PS3. EPIC FAIL. Then it was Resistance 2, no, Repetitive 2 as it's called today with lackluster sales, then LittleBigPlanet, with horrible sales.

Sony fanboys keep pointing to "the next big game" and sadly, they disappoint each and every time. Killzone 2 will start getting less than perfect reviews, then some mild criticism, then more serious criticism (a game with no coop play in this day and age? wtf!), then once it comes out, it will be derided as a failure.

Get ready for it (the let down).

One thing is for sure:

Sony/Guerrilla's attempt at making everyone focus on the graphics and just the graphics has paid off in full. All anyone cares about now is how the game looks, not how it performs or even if it does anything remotely different. Remove the graphics, and here you have one of the most run-of-the-mill shooters ever created.

It also seems like the AI is kinked in every video I see. Enemies and allies leave cover for no reason, barely respond to gunfire (what the hell happened after 3:10?), and overall just act in very unrealistic ways, especially when they duke it out face to face.

Also, 'scale?' Watch the videos you post: each segment of every level shows that you almost have no room whatsoever to even move. You walk down narrow corridors, small hallways, and tiny walkways with almost no breathing room 90% of the time. Whenever the environments do get big, there's not a whole lot to look at.

And lastly, not many people remember the story because there's nothing to remember. Lo and behold, the human race and some alien race are duking it out for god knows what, a story used time and time again; we've seen it in Halo, and we've seen it in Gears of War. I wasn't 'judging the graphics' in the first Killzone because the cutscenes where PRE-RENDERED. Find another excuse.

Overall, Killzone 2 just appears to be another hyped up graphics fest. And if it really requires a company to spend five years and the biggest budget in history to produce a title like this, I think the PS3's lifespan is going to be smaller than Sony originally claimed.

dude stfu how can you say this is just another run of the mill shooter when you most likely never played. You've seen 6 min of tidbits from one level and you think you have the game figured out? I've played the killzone 2 multiplayer beta, i've played gears before i have call of duty 4 and WAW and i've played halo and every half life game, duke nukem game and I think killzone 2 will definitely have one of the best online components of any game to date. You really won't understand until you have played it's warzone mode. the multiplayer graphics are gorgeous and the destructibility on some maps is eerily realistic. From what's been said the single player campaign is one of the best with an ending that is said to be pretty deep. For me the multiplayer feels like call of duty, team fortress and real life had a threesome. It will probably be the same with single player from all the gameplay videos i've seen. I think if you are not fully immersed after you play this game then idk what to say there might be a problem there somewhere. (and I don't mean with game) btw try and experience it with at least 5.1 surround sound it makes every game automatically better lol.

There, sorry for that I'm just sick of reading posts these past couple of weeks from these bitter people who try to hate and trash killzone 2 because they have seen a gameplay video from 2 minutes of a level or something but never played it and don't really know what they are talking about.

Did cod4 really do anything different(Other than it being a modern day setting of cod)? No but it's the way it made you feel and that's the same thing I think killzone 2 is going to do. It feels so good to play I can't wait for the 27th.

how come every story about this game has vicious comments following it? okay, i know these are "the console wars" and all that, but how can people (who either don't have a ps3 or clearly havent played one) talk down an exclusive that hasn't even been released yet? i'm not sayin it's gonna be the greatest game ever cuz i aint played it, but to say it's gonna b a monumental fail, thats just flaming. sure haze n socom were lame, but for every flop theres an MGS4 LBP and R2 round the corner, oh and as for " Repetative 2", clearly you've played a little game called halo3, lets come back when the games released and see what we hav 2 say bout it then. til then keep it to yourself
PSN-AXERATED

Errmmm... 'Secret' weapon?

That would imply Killzone 2 is somehow unknown... 'secret' as it were.

Seeing as how the game has been in the piblic eye for three or four years now, it should hardly qualify as 'secret'.

Man... all these amateur-ish blogs and websites that N4G insists on pushing are really an embarrassment. I work 60+ hours a week, have little education and no writing experience... but it would seem I could post/maintain a better blog than the majority of hacks that N4G lets post.

Go ask your mom for a PB&J, and maybe a capri sun. Leave the opinion pieces and game journalism to the 'professionals'.

Allow me to qualify this by stating that I am a PS3 owner and looking forward to Killzone 2 with great anticipation.

I just think childish fanboys posting amateurish opinion pieces make the rest of the PS3 community look like a bunch of double digit IQ automatons.

"Secret" as in there are more hopes and expectations riding on the back of killzone 2 by Sony then the public might be fully aware of, not the latter something physical that hasn't been disclosed yet. simple semantics and logic. <3 ps3.

From what I've seen of this game, I'm not impressed. FPS are a tired genre now. I don't think this game will be a console seller. The first one was a big letdown. I've been playing games for 28 years, seen it all before...

Anonymous said... / January 19, 2009 6:08 AM

yr on about voice acting?? What a dumbass!! U ever heard voice acting in Galo?? Fucking retarded, stereotypical american yapping. Who the fuck even talks like tht?? At elast in KZ2 they sound like regular guys shooting guns in war! And all u xbots need to shut the fuck up!! U are all just jealous tht the BEST ever FPS to come out on a console is a PS3 exclusive!! But u shouldn't be, as ALL the BEST games in their respective genres are sony exclusives!! Just fucking get over it, and resign yrself to the fact that u enjoy sub-quality! That u like products that are shite!!

Anonymous said... / January 19, 2009 7:10 AM

Now now fanboyz, why all the cursin' 'n fussin'? Why can't everybody just shut the frak up and wait for KZ2 or any big game to come out on whatever console it's coming...
Grow the hell up.

David Macphail said... / January 19, 2009 7:34 AM

Wow....looks like we have some nervous 360 fanboys on here. Although it's no wonder they'd be jealous of K2 seeing as how it's graphics make Gears 2 look prehistoric.

Anyway, i don't think the comeback of the PS3 will begin with Killzone 2 - it'll happen when Sony eventually cut the price.....Killzone 2 will certainly turn some heads though and maybe, MAYBE get the biased gaming media off of Sony's back. Just because the PS3 didn't sell 50 million in two months hardly makes it a failure - does anyone need reminding that the PS3 sold more in Japan in it's first month then the Xbox 360 did in it's first YEAR???

blaze said... / January 19, 2009 8:07 AM

@ mr. G. then stop playing games then or at least stop commenting on them since you've apparently seen it all it's obvious no game is going to please you anymore. You say that the genre is tired well who's to say that it can't be revitalized. That's why new powerful consoles are made every generation so there can be more packed into game to bring a fresh experience.

I believe the term is don't knock it until you've tried it otherwise you look like an a-hole.

sickbastard said... / January 19, 2009 8:29 AM

from what i have seen so far i have to agree that the presentation for this game is top-notch ,but in the other hand it really seems that the AI in this game is going to suck bad !never less i have already pre-order it! if not to give some use to may paperweight PS3,that collecting dust !!

Mark said... / January 19, 2009 10:16 AM

Yeah the voice acting looks sketchy, but the game looks great overall

Chris said... / January 19, 2009 11:01 AM

While I agree that this game looks like it will most likely end up being great, I have to say that I thought this entire article was just a great big fan boy splooj-a-thon. I mean, "Sony's secret weapon"? Come on, this was the highlight of E3 a couple years ago, every blog/gaming site/tv gaming show has been talking about this game for the past three years! I think a better title for this article might have been "Sony's last hope." I know the writer of this clearly couldn't keep it in his pants any longer, but come on...if you're gonna write an article tell us something new, give us a review AFTER you've played the game, or just shut up so you don't waste people's time.

Anonymous said... / January 19, 2009 12:26 PM

If a game doesn't 1:1 system ratio is it a failure? Not everyone out there likes platform games or FPS or sports so don't expect a 1:1 ratio. I'm looking forward to killzone 2 and think the multiplayer component is one the most original of any FPS game that's been out. I played the beta so I'm speaking from experience. whether or not everyone and their mother buys this game means nothing to me, I only have but so many friends on my PSN account.
Stop bashing killzone 2. No game on any platform is perfect so don't expect it to be. Just enjoy the game your given. Remember you don't have to play it.

Anonymous said... / January 19, 2009 1:07 PM

the console wars start now? yeah ok bub, lets just forget the years of failure, LMAO

Anonymous said... / January 19, 2009 6:21 PM

Nicely written article, and yes, Killzone 2 looks nice. But that tripe about Sony establishing its "dominance" is ridiculous. I know you guys want your system to come out on top, but it's seriously over man. The PS3 is such a flop it's not even funny. I laughed about it for a long time, but it's gotten so bad recently that it's actually sad, and whats sadder is watching fanboys defend it. It's dying, and you guys know it. Just admit it already.

Anonymous said... / January 19, 2009 7:51 PM

A console that is dieing what are you smokeing it has 7 million less than xbox and xbox has been out for a year more idiot.
Also lets not forget ps2 is still on the market and the ps3 is 200 dollars more and wait last year it out sold 360 8 out of 12 months so suck it that is a console that is clearly not dieing maybe you should take a look in the mirror fanboy.

This exact thing happened with ps2 in the first few years and look the ps3 is doing better in its life span than the ps2 so hahaha i just love 360 fanboys that no nothing if anything your console is going to die. I also heard the 720 is coming out in 2011 so much for loyalty the 360 cant keep up and watch it wont even be as good as ps3 lol

Anonymous said... / January 19, 2009 8:26 PM

From what I've seen so far, this game already seems to be the best ever fps for a console. Remember Counter-Strike for the pc? That's the #1 fps shooter of all time. This game will do for consoles what Counter-Strike did for the pc. KICK ASS. Enjoy it when it comes out.

sickbastard said... / January 19, 2009 8:30 PM

i think that all that talkin you have on the comment above is just pure fanboy crap talking! So the PS3 haves a year less on the market so what?
Just imagine if the 360 had a blueray drive!?? where the hell will be the PS3 and probably Sony ??
I can tell PS3 fanboy craps out there that the main reason i bought a PS3 is due to blueray!and like me many other people!IF the 360 have had blueray i probably will just own the 360!since the majority 90% of multiplat games run better on the 360!the only games that i own for the PS3 is MGS 4 and RFM2 and 1,ou and the rest i buy for PC and 360!AND I HAVE MY PAPERWEIGHT PS3 SINCE DAY TWO !

I must agree 100% with the comment above me. (Sarcasm) I'm sure Resistance: Fall Of Man 2 is a great game! Well, it really is. But it's called Resistance 2 SIR. Now would you be so kind, and, well - MOVE ON. Stop going on blogs specifically for Sony. Seriously. Let us be, and we'll let you be.
