The PlayStation 3 is a very capable machine with a lot of features. And we've certainly seen that with some of the firmware updates Sony has put out. But there's one thing people want more than anything else added to the XMB. That something, is cross-game voice-chat.
We've all read the stories. We've all read the forums. Sony can't just add the feature to the PS3's OS. There are issues with patenting on Microsoft's part and all this other nonsense. How could Sony work their way around this?
Over the past few months, people have been talking about how Skype, currently on the PSP (2000 and 3000 models only), could also be added to the PS3's XMB and enabled for use in-game. In my opinion, this would blow away anything Microsoft currently has for voice-chatting cross-game - because that would allow us to make calls to friends who aren't even at their PS3s. For example, you have a clan battle in Killzone 2, your friend forgot and you need inform him before it begins. Why don't you just call him via Skype on the PS3? That's just one example of how this heavily requested feature could be used.
The PSP (2000 and 3000 models only) has had Skype on it for quite some time now. Even the PSP version of Skype allows you to call friends using the service and call their landline or cellphone. It's an incredibly useful feature that PSP owners are very fortunate of. And don't worry PSP owners, the games are coming! I'm certain if the PSP could handle Skype, then the PS3 is more than capable. What's the hold-up Sony?
Thanks for reading.

Nice idea.
Hope Sony consider it.
Would defs make use of this feature.
I agree. That would be a really good solution.
Good thought! I wonder why sony doesn't start integrating more and more third party properties. Why does everything have to be proprietary. Apple has set the model with the apps available for its devices. I would love to see skype, gmail, and others integrated through the XMB. Right now I think the interface is very clunky, heck i'm still having to delete my messages one by one. My old cell phone has a better interface.
Thanks guys!

Y are u doing that? Y dont u just delete all by pressing triangle in at sent or recieved?
Im so surprised no ones ever though of that before! Greate idea
To whoever doesn't know how to delete all the received and/or sent messages:
To delete all sent/received messages, hit triangle on the sent/received icon and hit delete. TA DA!
It could be Sony's way of trojan horsing the PS3 into board rooms with their HD projectors...the PS3 is far cheaper than polycom video conferencing units..
Holy crap, that sounds great. I'm really excited at this possibility! Great idea!
Absolutely and add XBMC to it while they at it. There is so much more the PS3 can do and I know there are a number of SourceForge developpers working on "secret" projects for the PS3 but nothing visible yet. We'll see
Oops Luka :) that was not her, that;s me, Tom.
Dis is a freakin awesome idea!!
Man I have always used Skype on my PSP. Just cant wait for it to come on PS3.
Cant wait for 3d games to come too
if sony wants to catch up to the 360 theres some serious changes they need to make.
i mean the OS on the 360 is 1000 times better you can download games and updates so freaking fast.
NXE update 12 minutes.
duke nukem 3D 20 minutes.
latest ps3 firmeware 75 minutes.
titan pack for UT3 132 minutes.
KILLZONE 2 DEMO 6 YES 6 $#@%ING HOURS.
i cant believe how much faster xbox live is.
now i understand why you have to pay for it well i guess you get what you pay for.
pluss sony PLEASE ENABLE US TO DOWNLOAD ITEMS WHILE THE CONSOLE IS OFF OR WHISPER QUIET SO I CAN LEAVE IT ON AND GO TO SLEEP THAN IT TURNS OFF ONCE ITS DONE.
IF THE 360 CAN DO THIS WHY NOT THE PS3 IT IS 300 DOLLARS MORE EXPENSIVE AND IT HAS LESS FEATURES MAKES SENCE HUH?
that would be awesome! then i would be able to call my wife on her PS3 from my laptop or PSP!
Looking at the current market, I see the Cisco Telepresence is very nice. You can see in "24" the presidents talking to each other with that system.
With Skype on my 40' TV in combination with my PS3 that would be very good competitive offer.
Another thing is that the oustide world is not on the internal PS3 chat. So interopability is key! Look at pidgin o trilian and other mix chat environments. That is what we need. No more proprietary systems. "Open"
So Sony and Skype... please ( and Sony: another great argument to buy PS3 and boost the sales figures). And why not it is already on PSP.
Yes, please!
